Last year (2025), I participated in the Keelung Peace for the Sea Camp and learned how the port city of Keelung served as a gateway for Taiwan to the outside world, particularly in the past. The 50 years of Japanese colonial rule, experienced during Asia's drive toward modernization, have had a profound impact on the city today, and traces of Japan can still be found throughout the city. The most obvious example is the architecture, from the stately designs of the Imperial Japanese era to wooden Japanese architecture. Japanese curry is still popular, and seafood curry udon is apparently a Keelung specialty. Chikuwa, or chikuwa fish cake, is also known as "chikura" and is still sold at the port. There are countless connections to between Keelung and Japan, Histrically, Keelung had a Japanese district, as well as Ryukyuan and Korean villages. East Asia Peace March 2025 (Miyako, Ishigaki, Yonaguni 5/20-6/7)

Na mu Myo ho Ren Ge Kyo Unconscious colonialism and structural discrimination Japan's westernmost monument Every year, I walk around Okinawa Island (the main island), the only place in Japan where ground wars took place, in preparation for the Okinawa War Memorial Day. However, this year I decided to walk around Miyako, Ishigaki, and Yonaguni. The reason is that since 2016, militarization has been prominent on these three islands due to anti-China sentiment, and plans are now underway to evacuate the entire island population. It is said that the current situation in Okinawa is similar to the eve of the Battle of Okinawa. During this march, I interacted with and listened to nearly 30 local people. I was able to hear the "real voices" of the people of Miyako and Yaeyama, and get to know Japan from their perspective. The Taiwan issue is China's internal problem Both sides should resolve the issue through dialogue. Taiwan should not stir up China. The Japanese government recognizes “one China.” This discourse is intended to deter China from using force against Taiwan. While this sounds like a legitimate logic to deter war, these statements have disappointed many Taiwanese. For nearly 400 years, Taiwan has been oppressed and ruled by forces from outside the island, including Europe, the Qing Dynasty, Japan, and the Republic of China. The overwhelming majority of Taiwanese people do not want to move from the democratic society they sacrificed so much to win in the 1990s to the current one-party dictatorship of the People's Republic of China. The Taiwanese people I meet often say that Taiwan can not engage in dialogue with China.
