In southern Japan there is an island called Okinawa. Ryukyu is the previous name of this island before the Japanese invaded in the 17th century.

During World War Ⅱ, Okinawa was sacrificed to protect the Japanese mainland. At that time, the majority Okinawans were Japanised in an education system, forcefully taught a loyalty to Japanese Emperor. In 1945 the U.S. brutally invaded Okinawa — the ”Storm of Iron" — and took the lives of 1 out of 4 Okinawan people.

From 1945 to 1972, the island was ruled by the US Military government. Okinawa became a lawless area. In 1972, the island was returned to Japanese hands.

In July, 2014, both the Japanese and US governments started the construction of a new U.S. military base to have a new base in Henoko, although 20% of the island is already occupied by US Bases. Henoko is the site of beautiful Oura bay. The government plans to landfill Oura bay, an area of unusual of marine bio-diversity where endangered species live.

In June, 2015 opinion poll shows that 80% of Okinawan people oppose the construction of the base. In protest, the people have built a permanent community of tents in front of Camp Schwab, a US Marine Corps base, and we are there every day around the clock. Opposition includes the prefectural government of Okinawa and many national and local representatives in Okinawa are our side.

On 13th、October, 2015
A governor of Okinawa revoked a permission of reclamation which was signed by Previous governor.

The dispute over the new U.S.base's construction in Henoko between Tokyo & Okinawa is set to develop into a court battle.

4th March, 2016
the government of Japan and the Okinawa prefectural government reached a settle ment for lawsuits filed over the plan move U.S.Marine Corps Air Station Futenma to Henoko.

At the moment, All constructions in Henoko has stopped.
Until the Japanese Government violently restart again.

11th July 2016
While the Henoko is stop, Japanese government suddenly re-started TAKAE helipads Construction.
More than 500 riot police has been sent from main land.
Beautiful Rain forest's village has become a chaotic situation.

February 2017
Henoko construction has restarted.
Land Fill has also started. the Government plans to complete in 5 years. However, the Protectors at Henoko keep fighting to protect the bay. As well as a Governor of Okinawa and Mayor of Nago city have power to not being complete the construction.
Next year, January and November, there are elections for both mayor and governor. It's going to be a key for Henoko.

The determined people won't give up.

This blog is to spread the message and to tell the story of our non-violent daily action.

Spirit of victims, we carry & move forward to close all military bases

The woman who has been killed is a close person.
I never met her but, she was a neighbor of my acquaintance.
She was age of 20's.
I have a hole in my heart. I guess everyone in Okinawa feel deep sorrow.

There were more than 574 atrocious crimes in this 43 years.
Before 1972 which is under U.S. military government rule, there were even more atrocious crimes.
"Enforcement of the law of the land in a U.S. soldiers" is a word which is after the crimes Military & government always express and never been come true.

People decided to stop all military & Y number vehicles.
Prevention of U.S. militant's crimes, we don't allowed them to go out side from Bases.
U.S. militants are everywhere in Okinawa. They have no restrictions to go out and drinking.
This is extremely dangerous for ordinary people.

This yellow line is a border line. we can't get into other side. If we did, we'd be arrested.
But, on the other hand, for U.S. soldiers, they can walk into both sides.
Now, Okinawan movement can reach new action. To shut down all base's gates in all around Okinawa.
                                                Blocking the gate by blocks
Elders stands to stop a military truck
U.S. female soldier shooting people's close shoot
You are welcome to join this struggle in Okinawa

Report from Meimei in Japanese

Article by MeiMei (Taiwanese) from Fukushima Peace Walk experience

Annual Peace Walk in North East Japan include Fukushima and areas where Tsunami hit.
This year we had MeiMei from Taiwan.
This article is what she felt by walking around Fukushima.

Few hours before departure for peace walk in Japan,
I was still sitting in my room watching all my things spreading everywhere on the floor.
I had no idea that if I should go or not…

It took 6 weeks ,750km from Sendai,Miyagi Prefecture to Peace Pagoda at Mt. Otera in Tokyo by walking.

Instead of emotional crying I said thank you to everyone as usual in the end of walk…didn’t even feel this was the end.
Everything I’ve seen, heard and experienced became cells in my body and some part of me are starting to change.

This is the fifth time I’ve been in Japan, but it’s the first time I see Japan so deeply not just as a tourist.Walking with Nipponzan Myohoji is a big challenge.
Monks and nuns chanting in the morning, chanting when they are walking, chanting all the time…it’s a practice for my patient.
One day I asked Yako angeson, why do you chanting "NaMuMyoHoReNGeKyo" all the time? What does it meant to you?

She answered “while chanting  we send care and love to plants、flowers、animals 、people and everything".

It hit me right away and I finally understood why I’m walking here.I’m not just people from Taiwan, not just a human and I'm not just me.
I feel connected to the world no matter I'm from different countries,no matter I'm in the beauty of nature or walk passing by those contaminated areas.

Most of the time we were ignored by people while walking on the road.
There were only two who are exception...the police and children.
I guess that’s how the society think of us…”Dangerous and Mysterious”.

I am impressed by the strong hearts of Nipponzan Myohoji. When we were facing 10 police man in front of the National Diet Building,Yako angesan didn’t want to move at all even the police try to force us to leave.I also felt there is no need to be afraid standing here if you were thinking there are still people suffering from the nuclear accident in Fukushima and all the people who feel anxious about the radiation around this country.

I couldn’t understand why most people wouldn’t take more actions but just keep the way the live as usual. But as the time passed by during the walk,I got to realizing a little bit why people are afraid of showing their own feelings just like when they were seeing us walking on the street and immediately running into their house or just turn around into another alley…
I wonder,is it easier to pretend there is nothing happened after the accident? Is it hard to choose the right thing just because most people don’t think it’s proper? Is it naive to believe that nature is the most precious thing we need to protect?

I see fears from people, they don’t have hope for the future but maybe acting as nothing happened is the best way to live for them.
Every time when I think of this point the only thing come up is that we should stop the nuclear power and as a human being, shouldn’t we take some responsibility for the earth?

Have we ever thought where do those electricity power go?How do we use it?
If we can keep life life more simple and not just chasing for our own desires in the society…

Over looking the Chimneys of Fukushima Daiichi NPS

The last night before flew back to Taiwan we were sitting in the kitchen listening to the news from radio about earthquake happened in Kyushu.
Nothing we can do neither for the earthquake now nor the nuclear accident happened 5 years ago.
That remind me again why I’m here, the faces of people from Fukushima, the sadness from organic farmer in Sendai, the trees were being cut in the forest, the contaminated soil bags located on the side of road, the river with warning contaminated sign…

Stories need to be shared, hopeless people need to be healed and be loved…
Nature, let’s keep the way it was.

I am sincerely grateful walking and meeting all the people in Japan.I’ve seen broken hearts and soul during this trip, but I also had many smiles and love from Japanese people.

Thanks to everyone who gave us warm hearts and supporting the walk, you are participating, you are also walking with us.

Especially thanks to all the walkers I’ve met.
Thanks for teaching me to see and listen by your strong hearts and soul.
Thanks for teaching me to be patient by all the early chanting morning.
Thanks for teaching to be humble and not being brush off to this world by walking step by step.

I deeply feel that I’m connected to this world with all you guys.

Thank you Japan, please be strong and don’t walk away from what you supposed to believed.

Depth of thought & action

While Henoko New Base construction has been stopped, There are so many things going on around Okinawa only...

One big thing is an election for prefecture government on early June.
Onaga prefecture government need to keep their seats or get even more.
Also National diet election will be held on July this year.

One concern is Japanese Defense Force (JDF) is increasing their presence in Okinawa area. They are planning to set new base on Miyako Island, Ishigaki Island, and already in Yonaguni Island.
They also do joint training with U.S. Forces.

The people in Japan who think that Japan needs U.S. Forces presence & also needs to build up JDF, they see China or North Korea or even Russia as menaces and they think way of a resolution is having a deterrent force for our national security.

And when they hear pacifist speaks about achieving peace without military forces. They point out that is not realistic.

But, what they mean realistic ?

From my point of view, having a military force for deterrent a war is not realistic. It won't deterrent a war and also spending enormous budget for militarizing. Then people's minds are also set to the military mind set.

Greed, Fear and ignorance is a source of making war.

Recently, I saw a movie about Tibetan people who has been suppressed by China.
And I compared the words from Tibetan people and Okinawa people.

Tibetan man & woman tranquility said "I don't bear grudge anymore, but I pray for their better life" or "I have forgiven them, I pray for them to find true path of Buddha" something like these.

Many Okinawan elders speak "We don't want to be a sacrifice of Japan again. Okinawa has been discriminated for more than 70 years. We take Abe administration down" something like these.

I concern that Tibetan people maybe not as strong as Okinawa people's words, but deeper...

Okinawa people now have very strong movement against big power but the depth of the words compare to Tibetan people, or for example Native American etc... Less spiritual...Less Religious...
That what I concern....but I'm not pessimistic for the future of Okinawa. Because, their ancestors are always with them and there are few people who offer the prayer everyday...
